Total Hip Replacement is a joint surgery in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant to reduce pain and to restore normal function of the hip. This surgery is usually performed if the hip joint is affected by arthritis, fracture and other conditions like avascular necrosis.
The physical therapy before and after the surgery is necessary to enhance functional recovery of the patient. The overall rehabilitation goals after THR are to maintain joint range of motion, strength and endurance, and assist independence in activities of daily living (ADLs). In the initial phase of rehabilitation, more emphasis will be given towards “hip precautions” to prevent joint dislocation.
